  • Abby Mack, Consultant

    Abby delights in sharing in an international dialogue and providing language resources and educational development to her audiences. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor at New York University, where she has also directed writing programs. She has taught academic and professional English at corporations, private and public universities, and in K-12 settings. At NYU, she co-created the TESOL certificate program and designed courses. She was also a founding member of the Center for New Immigrant Education (CNIE). Prior to NYU, she taught full-time at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Oregon. Abby has evaluated several language programs across the US as a site reviewer for the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation. She has experience working in human resources at an international healthcare agency based in New York City.

    Abby has presented nationally and internationally at conferences on improving English pronunciation and listening comprehension. Her research interests include teacher training, English for Specific Purposes, and teaching reading. Abby earned an MA in Applied Linguistics from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a BA in Spanish from the University of Evansville. She is based in Brooklyn, New York.

  • Mary Ritter, Consultant

    Mary Ritter is an innovative ESL specialist and committed advocate for workplace diversity and inclusion for international professionals and refugees. Her expertise includes K-12 ESL teaching, intercultural communication, accent training, public speaking, business communication, and industry-focused skills training.

    She joins Tasmy Consulting from New York University, where she served as Clinical Assistant Professor at the NYU English Language Institute. In addition to teaching classes, she served as a Faculty Trainer and Global Academic Fellow Trainer, training students, staff, and faculty at schools such as NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU Shanghai as well as designing workshops at the NYU-SPS International Student Support Center. She has won both a Teaching Excellence Award and an Outstanding Service Award from the NYU School of Professional Studies.

    She has worked for career advancement for immigrant professionals for twenty years, starting as a teacher and instructional designer for Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC). She has worked as an Intercultural Trainer at Verisk|ISO and a Management Trainer at the Peter F. Drucker School of Management. She was a co-founder of and lead teacher for NYU’s Collaborative for New Immigrant Education, an innovative research-practice partnership providing tuition-free English language instruction and support services to New York City’s refugee community, and a member of the NYU Migration Network.

    Mary worked on a Ph.D. in Political Science at Claremont Graduate University, where she was an Earhart Fellow. She earned an M.A. in English from Queen’s University and a B.A. (Honours) in English from Trent University, where she was a Champlain Scholar. She also holds a Certificate in TESOL from the Interlingue School of Languages in Rome, Italy.

  • Suzanne Kaplan-Fonseca, Consultant

    Suzanne is an early detector of potential miscommunications. An experienced, creative, and agile global educator with expertise in teaching, teacher training, instructional design, intercultural communication, and administration, Suzanne has taught English to learners of all ages and levels in the U.S., Japan, and Mexico. Suzanne has presented at regional, national, and international conferences on her original materials and methodologies.

    Committed to client success through rigor, ongoing advising, and customization, Suzanne is an innovative thinker and an efficient problem solver who challenges clients to use observation and reflection as two of their most valuable tools. She has worked with executives, educators, and teams from Europe, Asia, and Latin America, including Avio, LG, and Suntory.

    Before joining TASMY Consulting, Suzanne was a Clinical Assistant Professor and Programs Coordinator at New York University, specializing in language education, intercultural communication, program development, and teacher training. Having worked for both Pearson and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, editing and proofreading are also parts of her skill set. In 2022, she founded The Instrumentors - a volunteer organization through which ESOL professionals support displaced professionals' language and communication needs.

    Suzanne holds a BA from Skidmore College in Language and Early Childhood Development and an MA in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from the School for International Training in Brattleboro, VT.

  • Yuna Seong, Founding Member

    Yuna Seong is a language educator and assessment expert with extensive experience in language assessment, language teaching, and program/curriculum design. Growing up as a bilingual and always having to code-switch between two different cultures and languages, Yuna values the importance of intercultural communication skills, and she is a strong advocate for diversity and inclusion across global language teaching and learning contexts.

    She is currently the Director of the Community Language Program and two advanced certificate programs (TESOL and Language Program Management Certificate) at Teachers College, Columbia University (TC), where she hires and trains language educators and language program professionals who aspire to teach and manage their own language programs.

    Prior to TC, Yuna was a Clinical Assistant Professor and Assessment Coordinator at New York University (NYU). During her years at NYU, she designed and taught a wide array of specialized courses for English language learners from diverse language, academic, and professional backgrounds. In addition, she developed, administered, and managed the program’s English proficiency exams and successfully led a two-year project overhauling the curriculum.

    She is also a consultant and exam reviewer for major testing companies such as the Educational Testing Services (ETS), College Board, and PSI, and has presented her research on language assessment and cognitive processes involved in oral communication in peer-reviewed journals and at a number of international conferences.

    Yuna earned her MA in Second Language Studies from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa with a concentration in language assessment, measurement, and program evaluation, and she is earned her doctorate in Applied Linguistics at Teachers College, Columbia University in 2023.

  • Tara Tarpey, Founding Member

    Tara Tarpey is a teaching and learning professional with extensive expertise in higher education, intercultural communication, curriculum development, program administration, and assessment.

    Before joining TASMY Consulting, Tara served as a Clinical Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator at New York University, specializing in language education, writing, and critical thinking. She also oversaw all aspects of two academic programs, built university-wide partnerships, and managed special events.

    Tara has also done consulting for the US Department of State, the NYC Department of Education, and the Ministry of Foriegn Affairs of Japan and has been published in a range of professional journals. She has a BA in English from Vassar College; an MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Teachers College, Columbia University; and an EdM in Applied Linguistics (Discourse) from Teachers College, Columbia University.
